"The reason Tsav keeps trying to talk about business, or about starting a company, is because he thinks 'well, basically everyone likes talking about money.' How sad that it seems nobody's that interested in getting close to each other by talking about their hobbies."
"Like Xylo, Tsav is someone who was orphaned by the Demon Blight, but there's no set information about his parents. Instead, there were some people in the organization [Gwen Mohsa] who acted as his caregivers."
In response to a question about who in the group has big/small appetites:
"Xylo, Tatsuya, Rhyno and Neely eat a lot of meat; Norgalle and Patausche also have big appetites. Jayce and Dotta would be classified as gourmets if you had to categorize them. Venetim, Tsav and Teoritta have smaller appetites."
In response to a different question about appetites:
"As I mentioned before, Neely eats the most for sure. Xylo and Rhyno come next. Norgalle and Patausche also have good appetites. Jayce and Dotta are about on par, and Tsav eats a decent amount when he can. Venetim and Teoritta have small appetites."
In response to a question about who on the team has artistic skills or sensibilities:
"Tsav's good at everything, so he's also good at drawing. Other than him, Norgalle and Rhyno can draw pretty realistically, and Xylo and Jayce are also pretty decent. Dotta has good artistic sensibilities only. That said, it's cruel to expect good artistic tastes from our newbie."
In response to a question about who naturally sleeps more vs. less:
"Before they were sentenced, in terms of sleep duration, the ranking would be something like Tatsuya > Dotta > Venetim ~ Rhyno ~ Norgalle > Xylo > Jayce > Tsav. Venetim would sleep about 7 hours. Tsav can seriously function on pretty much no sleep."
"Frenci is a little younger [than Xylo]. The ones around the same age, just short of their 30's, would be Xylo, Jayce, Venetim. Norgalle is a little older than them. Dotta and Tsav are around their early 20's. Tatsuya's hard to say even in terms of how old he looks. Rhyno's also meant to look somewhere in his 20's, probably."
"In terms of their ability to affect the flow of the battlefield, the ranking would be something like His Majesty > Jayce ~ Xylo > Tatsuya > Tsav > Dotta > Venetim. Tsav is ridiculously strong against individual people, but as a single asset on the battlefield, he can only be useful in one specific place at a time. Those ranked below Tsav are basically useless on the battlefield, so there's a wide gap there."
In response to a question asking if anyone is good at music:
"Singing and playing instruments are considered pretty universal hobbies. Xylo isn't very interested, but Jayce likes the flute and Tsav is dexterous enough that he can pick up basically anything. In terms of singing, Dotta will occasionally make up and sing weird songs, but our newbie who was raised by the church is also pretty decent. Music is a world that Rhyno can't even comprehend."
In response to a question about the team's heights:
"Ordered by height, the ranking would be something like Neely > Xylo ~ Rhyno > Tatsuya > Venetim > Norgalle >> Tsav > Dotta ~ Jayce > Teoritta. Maybe Venetim often looks smaller than Norgalle since he's scrawny."
Yeah, sounds about right, except they made Norgalle a bit too tall, lmao. Rhyno and Xylo must be pretty huge ... it's hard to tell how tall Patausche is because she's probably wearing cavalry heels and a hat in this shot, but maybe she's between Tsav and Venetim's heights?
In response to a question about who on the team drinks:
"Basically everyone other than Tatsuya drinks. Venetim and Norgalle favor wine. Xylo and Dotta have similar tastes, and favor a whiskey-ish drink made of barley. Tsav and Rhyno are the type to like anything that gets them drunk. Jayce is the only one who keeps something like fermented mare's milk hidden on him."
"Tsav goes as quiet as the dead when he sleeps. There have been reports of him sleep-talking when actually he was just awake. Dotta and Norgalle have terrible sleeping habits. Rhyno is generally in solitary confinement or with Tatsuya, so the other members don't know how he sleeps."
"Xylo, Venetim and Norgalle like them a fair bit. Jayce and Dotta dislike them. Rhyno and Tsav don't particularly like or dislike them. Hard to say with Tatsuya."
In response to a question about the order of heroes being added to the penal unit:
"When the penal unit was first established, the starting members were Tatsuya, Venetim, Rhyno and a few others. They served as support units in trial operations, and about the time that a few of the starter members had been reduced to little more than husks, Norgalle and Jayce were thrown in, followed by Xylo. Dotta and Tsav are relative newcomers."
In response to a question about the heroes having basic metabolism:
"They do seem to have basic metabolism, including their hair growing over time. Tsav (just cutting it shorter) and Venetim (doing things a little more properly) are the ones in charge of taking care of that."
In response to a deleted question (probably about birthdays):
"Just in terms of rough details I've decided, the ones with winter birthdays are Xylo and Venetim. Spring birthdays are Jayce, Tsav and Neely. Patausche has a summer birthday, and Dotta has an autumn birthday, something like that. Norgalle and Rhyno's birthdays are, you know, so they're kinda like that."
In response to a question about tattoos and scars:
"Rhyno has geometric sacred seals tattooed into his back. Tatsuya is a mess of scars all over, and Tsav might also have some sacred seals tattooed on him (not yet decided). And Xylo is incredible. The production costs for him are probably through the roof."
In response to a question about how good the team is at zigg (the in-universe board game):
"Tsav (rarely plays it) > Xylo ~ Jayce ~ Norgalle > Venetim > Teoritta ~ Patausche > Dotta should be about right. I think Tatsuya would be pretty decent if he could play it. Neely would be top 4, probably. Dotta's absolutely terrible."
In response to a question about Tsav calling Xylo aniki / big bro:
"Tsav changes his nicknames for people according to his whims, and if something feels right, then he'll just keep using it. For example, he called Kivia 'big sis' for a little while. He probably just felt right called Xylo big bro."
The author held an unofficial popularity poll on his twit in Sept. 2022, lmao. It got about 300 votes. Results:
1. Rhyno (17.2%) - "Gathered the most votes by far, and took 1st place with a substantial lead. He's considered even less trustworthy than Venetim by his teammates, but if there was an actual popularity poll in the world of Sentenced to be a Hero, he might get a pretty high vote there, too. Regardless of his inner thoughts, he's well-liked by the citizens thanks to his actions."
2. Venetim (13.7%) - "I think he gathered this many votes thanks to his looks, but I can't dismiss the possibility that there was some sort of fraudulent activity, too. The rest of the heroes would probably agree."
3. Tatsuya (11%) - "I feel like it can't be helped that Xylo would lose to Tatsuya. After all, Tatsuya is the hardest-working member of the penal unit. I think his ranking jumped up suddenly thanks to votes from his devoted fans."
4. Xylo (10.6%) - "Our protagonist who had to duke it out with his close competition Tsav. If he hadn't gotten a sudden burst of votes at the end, he might have ended up in the same ranking as Jayce. Hearing about these results would make him a little grumpy ... I think."
5. Tsav (10.3%) - "Around here is where our contestants are fighting fiercely over every single vote. Tsav might find this placement of his unacceptable ... because he delusionally believes that he's the character with the saddest backstory, and thus is extremely likeable."
6. Norgalle (8.2%) - "Because a king isn't designated by popular vote, even if he heard about these results, he'd only be displeased by them, he wouldn't have any sort of identity crisis over it."
7. Dotta (7.2%) - "I think he's raked in most of his votes based on appearances ... but I guess he does accomplish good deeds once in a while, so he's probably just barely holding onto some goodwill."
8. Neely, Jayce, Teoritta (7.2%) - "The three of them got this ranking together. Good for you, Neely and Jayce!"
"Tsav seems like the type that's scared of being a penal hero, which is obviously hellish, because he doesn't believe in an afterlife. It feels like he'd consider sudden death the same as sleeping."
A similar distaste towards sleep was mentioned in a little bonus drabble, "Tsav's Day Off."
"It was past midnight. Dotta, assigned as my bunkmate, was probably already asleep. Poor thing.
If you ask me, time is your lifespan. And wasting away your lifespan on sleep is no sane way to act. If you could choose between sleep and living a little longer, then old folks on death's door would choose more life in a heartbeat.
So to choose to spend your time sleeping -- I have no choice but to consider that insane."
Fukushima discussing the changes in Tsav's tone of voice in the anime.
Iizuka: Before that, too, there's a part where his tone of voice changes for an instance, it's like 'oh, the tone changed!' Fukushima: Yeah, there's a few places where his tone changes a bit. Iizuka: It's so ... fine-tuned? It's so fine-tuned. Fukushima: Yeah, fine-tuned. Um, like that part where he chops off the soldier's hand. Iizuka: Yeah. Fukushima: It's kind of a theme that, now and again, you'll get to see little glimpses of Tsav when he's not joking around. It's not quite that he's two-faced, but I guess it's more that he's volatile? I'd like his volatility to be part of his charm. So I'm really glad that that came through. Oh, but that volatility is really tough to do! Iizuka: (laughs) Fukushima: It's hard! Iizuka: Yes, like the part where he was saying 'Can you get the Highness to back off the front lines?' he was suddenly more serious. Fukushima: Yeah, it's like he's showing 'this isn't the sort of situation to be clowning around.' In terms of music, it'd be kind of like the key changing really suddenly so you need to adapt instantly. So for myself, I'd kind of like to make some breathing room, but Tsav's rhythm is so fast that there's no real space to make that breathing room ... Iizuka: I see ... Fukushima: It's like ... having to suddenly slam on the brakes, and needing to pinpoint exactly the right moment to change how to act, so I'm always on edge. [ soundboard: Don't die! ] Fukushima: Thanks! I won't die, though! But thanks, I'll do my best.
I thought this was interesting because in the light novel, there are fewer indications of Tsav suddenly changing tone on a dime like that; it feels like he's written to be a lot more consistently jokey? But I know the creator is often present for the recording sessions of these things, so I have to imagine that the toneshifts for Tsav are considered appropriate by Rocket Shoukai, so it's interesting. I think there's a big difference between a guy who is always jokey, and a guy who switches on a dime between jokey and serious.
How to draw Rhyno and Tsav, from the LN illustrator Mephisto:
Rhyno - Emphasis on this (circled part) shadow here! - Draw his cheekbones a bit - Eyes are shadows
Tsav - Put distance between the eyes and the eyebrows - Hair should look unstyled - Putting a few lines under the eye (circled part) makes it look like he's always grinning
I just wanted to link the web preview for ep 6 here because Tsav's insanely hype rambling about gambling instead of doing any actual episode previewing is so funny.
Dotta: Tsav, you like gambling, right? Tsav: Yup. Dotta: I see you rolling those dice around a lot. Tsav: Yup, yup! Dotta: That's a game called Zudahare, right? That's -- Tsav: Yup, yup, yup, that's a great question! As expected of you, Dotta, you know me so well! That's absolutely right, I'm the super genius Tsav that's good at everything, you know? So when it comes to any sort of normal skill-based game, it's impossible for me to lose, so gambling based completely on luck is the most exciting! And of gambling games, Zudahare is the best! You roll some dice and the results are based on your outcome, you see. Zuda is the worst outcome, and if you get that, you're basically gonna lose. And the best outcome is Hare, where you can pretty much start thinking about what you're gonna do with your winnings, but -- this is what makes this game so fun -- if the conditions are just right, then even the strongest Hare can lose to a Zuda! You wouldn't believe how many times I've been left crying in despair because of that! So get ready for it! As a special treat for today, I'll be relaying to you twenty episodes of 'Tsav's Sad Gambling Adventures!' Dotta-san, we're gonna stay up all night! Dotta: This is the worst, I shouldn't have talked to you ...
In response to the question, "His Majesty Norgalle's had the chance to show off his arm strength, and Tatsuya's also been able to do some amazing things, but what would the rankings amongst the heroes be like if we went by pure physical strength, not counting combat ability?"
"In terms of arm strength, it might be Xylo ~ Jayce > Norgalle > Patausche > Tsav > Dotta > Venetim. Rhyno and Tatsuya vary heavily depending on the time and situation, so it's a little hard to place them."
In response to the question "How many times has each hero been revived by the start of the story?"
"The only one with a resurrection count in the double digits, and just barely, is probably Norgalle. Dotta's a relatively recent addition to the unit, so he's managed to stay in the single digits so far. Tatsuya's count is on a level that's hard to even imagine, but for everyone else, they're around the lower to upper single digits. Rhyno and Venetim have especially low death counts."
In response to the question, "If the penal heroes weren't serving as penal heroes, then who would have been the most popular? In terms of how handsome they are and such ...":
"On a base level, in this era, marriages based on actual love and romance were an extremely rare concept. In those terms, the ones who had a a wide range of marriage prospects were Xylo and Jayce. If we're only talking about appearances, then those two and Rhyno, and also Venetim would be about on par."
Rocket Shoukai wrote little tidbits about different characters while promoting Yuushakei for the Tsugi ni Kuru Light Novel competition in December 2021.
Back when he was still a Holy Knight, Xylo was pretty well respected by his subordinates. Merchant families, almost like lower nobility, and priests' relatives would also try to arrange a marriage with him, but some myserious interloper put a stop to all of these plans without Xylo even realizing.
The history of the Forbartz family is pretty short, as they're nobles who were granted their land only in the generation of Xylo's grandfather. The Forbartz family were traditionally associated with combat using bows and arrows, and were on terrible terms with the Partiract family that held territory nearby.
Back when he was still a Holy Knight, Xylo was once taken by the sight of a building that Senerva had summoned, and so wrote and read aloud a poem about it. He also has other poems written, like "Living with the Winds of Kuvunji" and "Varigahi, the Water's Landscape" but has no intention of showing them to anyone.
Teoritta has much higher physical specs than a girl around her age would, and when it comes to marching, she can keep up more energetically than Venetim can. She'd rank in the top five among the current living godesses. The Goddess of Strength and the Goddess of Beasts are on a whole different level.
Teoritta's daily activities consist of encouraging other soldiers, and studying reading, writing and geography. She's picking up writing at an especially quick pace. Lately, in addition to her other studies, she's been learning how to care for horses, and so there's talk that she might already be contributing more to the group than Venetim.
Teoritta speaks as if she's the eldest sister of the goddesses, but most of the goddesses would agree that there's no real hierarchy like that amongst them, and they can just claim whatever position feels right for them.
Venetim has a fair number of personal belongings, mostly pertaining to hobbies or personal tastes. He doesn't have any specific hobbies himself, but as he makes idle conversation with people, he ends up acquiring random objects dealing with different hobbies or tastes. He quite likes books, though.
Due to certain circumstances, Venetim (on paper) was the owner of multiple merchant ships, but almost all the sailors he gathered for those ships were frauds with falsified credentials, so the ships sank without netting him a single coin of profit.
Venetim sometimes anonymously submits serialized fiction stories to the army's in-camp newspaper. The most popular one is about a young male student being summoned from another world mowing down the Demon Blight with mysterious combat abilities.
Dotta was born on the streets of the Royal Capital, but has never settled down in one place for very long. There was a time he half-heartedly tried out being an adventurer, but he was kicked out of the party very quickly and had to go on the run. Once you realize you've been had by Dotta, you're already too late.
Unlike Venetim, Dotta actually has his own tastes and hobbies, like low-stakes gambling, zigg [the in-universe board game] and card games, but he's not much good at any of them. For the record, in the world of Sentenced to be a Hero, due to advancements in printing press technology, card games are pretty popular.
Until he was captured, Dotta was thought to be a widespread theiving ring, and there was even a countermeasure team established specifically to stop "them." However, because the countermeasure team's assumption that the theiving ring was composed of many people was incorrect in the first place, they were pretty useless and thus all dismissed afterwards.
Tatsuya sometimes stops nears enemies he's already defeated and repeats the meaningless motion of squatting down and straightening back up. The reason for this is unknown, so the action is shrouded in mystery.
Venetim once ordered Tatsuya to be 'on standby for combat,' and then carelessly approached him afterwards and was killed. Tatsuya has the highest rate of friendly fire kills, mostly due to people approaching him while unawares of his combat status or other similar details. The second highest friendly fire kill count goes to Tsav.
This is back at the very beginning, but there was a brief period of time where Rhyno really did believe that Norgalle might be the true King of the Kingdom. It only took Jayce half a day after hearing Norgalle's self introduction to think "that can't be it."
Norgalle's actually been working on some extremely advanced designs for counterfeit coins and paper currency, and has been producing them using sacred seal tools. Venetim actually uses them like real money once in a while. This is, of course, an extremely unlawful act, but is a necessary part of the logistics for the penal hero unit.
Norgalle experiments with making a lot of different sacred seal tools, but there are plenty of failures among them. The aerial weapon based on dragons broke within seconds. While his tools are extremely advanced, they can also be extremely dangerous, so they can only be tested out using members from the penal hero unit.
The largest academic institution in the Federated Kingdom is run by the Temple in the form of the Order of Sacred Seal Scholars. It doesn't discriminate based on the social status of applicants, but the entrance exam is ridiculously difficult, and it also requires the draftsmanship necessary for engraving sacred seals, so among the penal heroes, only Norgalle and Tsaav would be able to pass it.
Of course, Tsav is capable of cooking. Unfortunately, his sense of taste has been obliterated, and he also has a strong resistance against poisons, so his precious cooking skills are pretty much wasted. He'd need to be careful starting with choosing his ingredients.
Tsav has made quite a few enemies due to unpaid debts, and thus often has assassins coming for his life. As a result, even Dotta, who shares some hobbies with him, doesn't like to go out around town with him, and when it comes to members that the other don't want to room with, he shares the top spot with Rhyno.
Back when she was attending the Federated Kingdom's military academy, Patausche Kiviaheld multiple committee roles, including the disciplinary committee, and achieved outstanding results in her activities. However, due to various circumstances, she received a ban request from the animal husbandry committee.
Due to the uneven distribution here, I suspect there might be more but Twitter's fucking dogshit worthless search function is letting them fall through the cracks ... RIP.

Xylo
1:
Back when he was still a Holy Knight, Xylo was pretty well respected by his subordinates. Merchant families, almost like lower nobility, and priests' relatives would also try to arrange a marriage with him, but some myserious interloper put a stop to all of these plans without Xylo even realizing.
2:
The history of the Forbartz family is pretty short, as they're nobles who were granted their land only in the generation of Xylo's grandfather. The Forbartz family were traditionally associated with combat using bows and arrows, and were on terrible terms with the Partiract family that held territory nearby.
3:
Back when he was still a Holy Knight, Xylo was once taken by the sight of a building that Senerva had summoned, and so wrote and read aloud a poem about it. He also has other poems written, like "Living with the Winds of Kuvunji" and "Varigahi, the Water's Landscape" but has no intention of showing them to anyone.
Teoritta
1:
Teoritta has much higher physical specs than a girl around her age would, and when it comes to marching, she can keep up more energetically than Venetim can. She'd rank in the top five among the current living godesses. The Goddess of Strength and the Goddess of Beasts are on a whole different level.
2:
Teoritta's daily activities consist of encouraging other soldiers, and studying reading, writing and geography. She's picking up writing at an especially quick pace. Lately, in addition to her other studies, she's been learning how to care for horses, and so there's talk that she might already be contributing more to the group than Venetim.
3:
Teoritta speaks as if she's the eldest sister of the goddesses, but most of the goddesses would agree that there's no real hierarchy like that amongst them, and they can just claim whatever position feels right for them.
Venetim
1:
Venetim has a fair number of personal belongings, mostly pertaining to hobbies or personal tastes. He doesn't have any specific hobbies himself, but as he makes idle conversation with people, he ends up acquiring random objects dealing with different hobbies or tastes. He quite likes books, though.
2:
Due to certain circumstances, Venetim (on paper) was the owner of multiple merchant ships, but almost all the sailors he gathered for those ships were frauds with falsified credentials, so the ships sank without netting him a single coin of profit.
3:
Venetim sometimes anonymously submits serialized fiction stories to the army's in-camp newspaper. The most popular one is about a young male student being summoned from another world mowing down the Demon Blight with mysterious combat abilities.
Dotta
1:
Dotta was born on the streets of the Royal Capital, but has never settled down in one place for very long. There was a time he half-heartedly tried out being an adventurer, but he was kicked out of the party very quickly and had to go on the run. Once you realize you've been had by Dotta, you're already too late.
2:
Unlike Venetim, Dotta actually has his own tastes and hobbies, like low-stakes gambling, zigg [the in-universe board game] and card games, but he's not much good at any of them. For the record, in the world of Sentenced to be a Hero, due to advancements in printing press technology, card games are pretty popular.
3:
Until he was captured, Dotta was thought to be a widespread theiving ring, and there was even a countermeasure team established specifically to stop "them." However, because the countermeasure team's assumption that the theiving ring was composed of many people was incorrect in the first place, they were pretty useless and thus all dismissed afterwards.
Tatsuya
1:
Tatsuya sometimes stops nears enemies he's already defeated and repeats the meaningless motion of squatting down and straightening back up. The reason for this is unknown, so the action is shrouded in mystery.
2:
Venetim once ordered Tatsuya to be 'on standby for combat,' and then carelessly approached him afterwards and was killed. Tatsuya has the highest rate of friendly fire kills, mostly due to people approaching him while unawares of his combat status or other similar details. The second highest friendly fire kill count goes to Tsav.
Norgalle
1:
This is back at the very beginning, but there was a brief period of time where Rhyno really did believe that Norgalle might be the true King of the Kingdom. It only took Jayce half a day after hearing Norgalle's self introduction to think "that can't be it."
2:
Norgalle's actually been working on some extremely advanced designs for counterfeit coins and paper currency, and has been producing them using sacred seal tools. Venetim actually uses them like real money once in a while. This is, of course, an extremely unlawful act, but is a necessary part of the logistics for the penal hero unit.
3:
Norgalle experiments with making a lot of different sacred seal tools, but there are plenty of failures among them. The aerial weapon based on dragons broke within seconds. While his tools are extremely advanced, they can also be extremely dangerous, so they can only be tested out using members from the penal hero unit.
Tsav
1:
The largest academic institution in the Federated Kingdom is run by the Temple in the form of the Order of Sacred Seal Scholars. It doesn't discriminate based on the social status of applicants, but the entrance exam is ridiculously difficult, and it also requires the draftsmanship necessary for engraving sacred seals, so among the penal heroes, only Norgalle and Tsaav would be able to pass it.
2:
Of course, Tsav is capable of cooking. Unfortunately, his sense of taste has been obliterated, and he also has a strong resistance against poisons, so his precious cooking skills are pretty much wasted. He'd need to be careful starting with choosing his ingredients.
3:
Tsav has made quite a few enemies due to unpaid debts, and thus often has assassins coming for his life. As a result, even Dotta, who shares some hobbies with him, doesn't like to go out around town with him, and when it comes to members that the other don't want to room with, he shares the top spot with Rhyno.
Kivia
1:
Back when she was attending the Federated Kingdom's military academy, Patausche Kiviaheld multiple committee roles, including the disciplinary committee, and achieved outstanding results in her activities. However, due to various circumstances, she received a ban request from the animal husbandry committee.
Due to the uneven distribution here, I suspect there might be more but Twitter's fucking dogshit worthless search function is letting them fall through the cracks ... RIP.
